Vitale da Bologna and Workshop, Jesus' Entry into Jerusalem

Circa 1351-60
Fresco
Pomposa Abbey, Codigoro, Italy

Jesus approaches Jerusalem from the left, riding on an ass and followed by the Apostles. Just ahead, two men lay garments on the ground before him and two others cut branches that will also be laid in his path. A welcoming crowd gathers at the city gate. Each of these details comes directly from the accounts in the synoptic gospels.
